Reddit Ad Revenue Rose 54%: What to Test Before Increasing Your Budget

Reddit’s advertising business is growing quickly. That is a reason to revisit the platform in your media plan, but an increase in the platform’s revenue is not a measurement of your next campaign’s return. The useful decision is whether a bounded test can establish a commercially valuable audience for your business.

What the new results establish

In results published on 29 October, Reddit reported third-quarter advertising revenue of $847 million, up 54% year on year. Daily active uniques rose 12% to 130.3 million. These are different measures: one describes the company’s advertising income; the other its daily audience metric. Their growth rates do not reveal the price or effectiveness of your next impression.

Separately, Reddit announced For You and Following feed choices on 28 October, distinguishing discovery from posts in joined communities. This is product context, not evidence that an advertiser can buy either feed separately. Check the controls actually available in your account before designing the test.

Start with a customer problem and a loss limit

Our recommendation is to write a one-page test brief before moving money. Name a customer problem, the relevant interest context, one offer and the action that would make the visit valuable. A qualified enquiry, a first order and a newsletter subscription are different outcomes; do not pool them under a single success label.

Set the maximum acceptable test loss and a review window that accommodates your sales cycle. Work back from contribution after variable costs to an acquisition-cost ceiling. If repeat purchasing is part of the case, show the assumption separately rather than spending against an unverified lifetime-value promise.

Choose a creative idea that answers the audience’s actual question. For a cycling product, a specific repair problem is a more testable proposition than a generic claim to improve every ride. This is an illustrative planning example, not a reported Reddit campaign or a guarantee of targeting availability.

Separate creative fit from commercial evidence

Keep the offer and landing-page task stable while comparing a small number of creative approaches. Check that visits reach the intended page and that the agreed action is recorded consistently. A strong click rate can coexist with weak qualification; a cheap lead can become expensive after sales rejects it.

Review platform reporting beside your own order or CRM records. Note attribution windows, duplicate conversions and the share of existing customers. Where feasible, add an appropriate holdout or a controlled comparison designed around your market and available sample. If the test cannot support a causal conclusion, describe the result as directional rather than incremental lift.

Make the next budget decision explicit

Define three outcomes in advance. Expand cautiously when qualified acquisition meets the contribution threshold and the operational checks hold. Revise the message or destination when attention arrives without useful actions. Stop when the loss limit is reached or measurement cannot distinguish a valuable response from activity.

After an increase, assess the cost and quality of the additional outcomes. An average built during a small test does not tell you what the next budget increment will buy. Avoid changing audience, offer and budget simultaneously: it removes the explanation you need if performance shifts.

Reddit’s report earns the platform a place on the testing agenda. Your own evidence must earn it a larger allocation. Take a named audience hypothesis, a capped exposure to loss and a decision date to the budget meeting; the platform’s growth rate alone cannot supply any of those.
